Youth Writer’s Workshop

Youth Writer’s Workshop is for writers ages 8 - 12. This year’s workshop took place in January and February and was taught by local activist, educator and author, Leticia Hernandez, author of:  Mucha Muchacha, Too Much Girl and Alejandria Fights Back!/¡La Lucha de Alejandria! Leticia is the co-editor of The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States. Her work appears in Maestrapeace, San Francisco’s Monumental Feminist Mural and Other Musics: New Latina Poetry

The Youth Writer’s Workshop puts youth in the author’s chair and gives them identity-building experiences working with professional authors while taking them through the process of writing, from idea to publishing. Participants attended four virtual sessions with Leticia as they learn narrative-building skills and connect with their own inner storytellers. Youth writers and their families received passes for four independent visits to complete writing prompts and be inspired by Fairyland’s sets, storybook characters, puppet shows and much more. The program culminates with our youth authors completing a narrative and illustration to be published in an anthology featured at our Book Festival, where young authors can present alongside distinguished book creators. We will open the 2024 application in November of 2024. Please stay tuned!
