Youth Writer’s Workshop

Youth Writer’s Workshop is for writers ages 8-14. This year’s workshop will be co-taught by local activist, educator and author, Melissa Reyes, author of: I Am Sausal Creek: SOY EL ARROYO SAUSAL, a bilingual English and Spanish picture book about the history of Oakland told through the voice of a local waterway, alongside Michaela Ellis, the Education and Curriculum Manager.

The Youth Writer’s Workshop:

• Puts youth in the author’s chair

• Gives them identity-building experiences working with professional authors

• Takes them through the process of writing, from idea to publishing.

• Is comprised of four in-person sessions at Children’s Fairyland with Melissa Reyes and Michaela Ellis

• Teaches students narrative-building skills and connects participants with their own inner storyteller

• Culminates with our youth authors creating an original narrative and illustration to be published in our Youth Anthology

• Showcases students’ work at our Book Festival on September 21st 2024, where young authors can present alongside distinguished book creators

We will open applications on February 23, 2024. Please stay tuned!
