Oakland History is Black History!
At Fairyland, we’re honoring the Black History born right here in our beloved city of Oakland. We’re celebrating the ingenuity, contributions, triumphs and culture of Oakland’s African-American community over the last 100+ years.
Our Fairyland plaza will be transformed into a spectacular visual display highlighting important people, time periods, and movements in the creating and shaping of Oakland’s rich history. You’ve got to see it! You’ll become familiar with compelling figures and facts you never knew you never knew, but definitely want to know! From Black Cowboys to Black Panthers and so much more in between, this educational experience is for the entire family and it’s one for the books!
Speaking of books, be sure to check out our curated lists of recommended reading for this event, brought to you by our book fairy, Angela, Fairyland’s in house librarian. Here, you’ll find the biographies of incredible Black artists, scientists, inventors and more! Celebrate Black Joy in February and beyond with these fabulous books, for babies, toddlers, and beginning readers.
